A spring loaded ball bearing sits in the recess holding the lever firmly in the correct position but allows the lever to move upon impact. I have to say, this is not an indestructible toy. It would have been better made without the squeaker or filling in the head. Once I removed those (after the dogs dug them out) they have played with this and the chicken (by the same company) for months. It's looking a bit ragged and I had to eventually cut the face off since they had chewed into it. However, the ropes have held despite multiple games of tug-of-war. My rat terrier and Moxie mix love these toys. Best ones we've found to last.
